Borne out of a soulful collaboration with dear friend Dr. Kristie Pretti-Frontczak, the ESSENCE GLOSSARY™ became a grounding document and beacon of sorts for our individual work in emotional intelligence, personal leadership, SEL, inclusion, and community health education & promotion.
The Essence Glossary is a listing of 32 social-emotional attributes and their definitions. It provides a common language and a simple approach to understanding and supporting the social-emotional development of all individuals. Ultimately, it's a tool for personal leadership-- one that promotes self-awareness and our shared humanity.
Fundamentally, the reason why emotional intelligence (EQ) is so important is that without it we cannot progress or evolve as human beings-- it helps us integrate all that we are (our wholeness) and therefore, it helps us see that others are on this same journey, too.
The two phases of inclusion (inner and outer)
Operationally, inclusion deals with opportunity and access, as well as making institutions, organizations, and systems healthier for everyone in them. It's about policy. While policy can and does alter behavior, without addressing the inner-landscape of each individual, we will invariably create new individual and organizational symptoms.
How can anyone be truly healthy if they're unaware of their emotions and how this impacts how they feel and think? This is the 'inner' or invisible aspect of inclusion--the work that begins on the inside of each of us!
From an individual (inner) perspective, inclusion is about self-awareness, acceptance and integration of our wholeness/trueness and innate intelligences. And although this is 'inner-work', no one can do this work alone.
You can download the Essence Glossary and other emotional intelligence resources on the VISUALS page, including 'Your health 3.0'-- a way for us to visualize and understand that our physical health and what we create and co-create is connected to our minds, our emotions, and our spirit, too.
